Michael Sopko grew up in Manville, in the flats between the Raritan and the Millstone, and came into this trade young, loading crews for a Somerset County van line while still in school. A spot on a dispatch desk came later.
From that seat he watched what a careless job leaves behind, and the complaints rhymed:
- A bait number floated only to win the signature
- A clock that somehow lapped the estimate
- Movers who wandered off with half the truck still bare
- A dresser forced through a narrow doorway and chipped
Watching it cycle wore on him. In 1985 he went out on his own with one padded truck, a small crew paid a fair wage, and a clear picture of the mover he had always hoped would pull up to his own curb.
Family-Owned Since 1985
Four decades on, Sopko Moving and Storage is still family-run and based in Manville. We have grown, but the shape has not changed: our movers are people we employ, not day labor pulled off an app, and the trucks on South Main Street are ours.
